Bulk export of Microsoft Whiteboard boards for tenant admins: what Export-WhiteboardHtml covers

Microsoft's migration support page lists two bulk export cmdlets, Export-WhiteboardHtml and Invoke-WhiteboardHtmlRetry. This page summarizes what Microsoft documents about them and about the other admin cmdlets it names, and where that documentation stops short of the 16 October 2026 deletion of Azure-based whiteboards. It names the cmdlets only; for the command syntax, use Microsoft's reference page listed at the end.

The short answer for admins

What Microsoft documents about Export-WhiteboardHtml

The cmdlet has a user mode and an admin mode. Microsoft's wording for each:

Admin mode needs consent. Microsoft's wording: "Admin mode permissions require admin consent."

Failures the reference describes

How faithful the HTML export is to the original board is not stated on the Microsoft pages read for this guide.

The admin cmdlets Microsoft lists

Microsoft's migration support page groups these cmdlets of the WhiteboardAdmin PowerShell module by purpose.

PurposeCmdlets Microsoft names
Inventory Azure boards and ownersGet-WhiteboardsForTenant, Get-Whiteboard, Get-WhiteboardOwners
Transfer ownershipSet-WhiteboardOwner, Invoke-TransferAllWhiteboards
Export whiteboardsExport-WhiteboardHtml, Invoke-WhiteboardHtmlRetry

Microsoft says administrators can check whether their tenant has Azure whiteboards by using Get-WhiteboardsForTenant. That is the first thing to find out: if the tenant has no Azure boards, the 16 October 2026 deletion does not touch its boards.

What admins can no longer do

What is still possible: until 16 October 2026 the remaining Azure-based boards can be viewed and exported.

Which boards are in Azure, and boards of people who have left

According to Microsoft's data management article, the boards stored in Azure are the ones originally created in Azure and the ones started on a Surface Hub or a Microsoft Teams Rooms device. OneDrive is the default storage for all new whiteboards.

Azure boards of a former user. Microsoft states that migration could only be triggered by the owner of an Azure whiteboard, which matters for boards owned by people who have left. Microsoft lists Set-WhiteboardOwner and Invoke-TransferAllWhiteboards for transferring ownership.

OneDrive-backed boards of a former user. These are ordinary .whiteboard files in the creator's OneDrive. Microsoft's wording: "To preserve a former user's OneDrive files, including .whiteboard files, first give yourself access to their OneDrive, and then move the files you want to keep." It adds a caution: "However, share links and permissions might not move."

The full runbook for a team or a tenant

The Microsoft Whiteboard rescue pack holds 3 files, the same for every buyer: a runbook as one self-contained HTML file and an alternatives matrix as CSV and as Markdown. The runbook has a section for tenant admins that names only the cmdlets Microsoft lists, a triage to list boards and flag the ones at risk, a printable checklist and a list of what the guide could not confirm.

It does not export anything for you, contains no software and does not reproduce PowerShell command syntax.

Price: $12 (USD), one-time payment, no subscription.

The three files are digital downloads delivered by Gumroad right after payment; nothing is shipped. Gumroad shows the total, with any applicable taxes, before you confirm. Refunds follow the refund policy shown on the Gumroad page.
