Microsoft Whiteboard alternatives in 2026: what you can import and what survives an image export
On 16 October 2026 the remaining Azure-based Microsoft Whiteboard boards are permanently deleted and the standalone apps for Windows, iOS and Android retire. This page compares 5 options for where to work next (Miro, FigJam, Mural, Lucidspark, or staying in Microsoft 365) on two points only: what each one accepts as an import, and what is left of a board that arrives as an exported image.
Before you switch
- You may not need to. This is not a shutdown of Microsoft Whiteboard as a whole. Microsoft states that for work or school accounts Whiteboard is not retiring and that those users can continue using it in Microsoft Teams and on the web.
- There is no direct importer on the pages read. None of the four vendors documents a direct importer for Microsoft Whiteboard on the pages checked. That is a statement about the pages read, not proof that no such importer exists anywhere.
- The route is a file upload. The export Microsoft documents for one board is Settings, then Export image. The steps are on the export steps and dates page. Microsoft's pages do not name the file format of that image.
- Export first, choose later. A board still in Azure has to be exported before 16 October 2026 whichever option you pick.
Miro
Import formats accepted
Images: bmp, gif, svg (as a solid image), jpeg, jpg, png, psd, heic, heif, pdf. Text documents: doc, docx, odt, rtf. Tables and spreadsheets: xls, xlsx, csv, ods. Maximum 30 MB per uploaded file.
What survives from a Whiteboard export
A Whiteboard image export uploads as one flat picture if its file type is on the list; notes, ink and shapes are not separate editable objects (our inference from the format, not a vendor or Microsoft statement). Neither Microsoft Whiteboard nor HTML is mentioned in Miro's supported file formats article.
FigJam (Figma)
Import formats accepted
Images: PNG, JPG, GIF, TIFF, WEBP. A CSV becomes a table with a 500 cell limit. Object-level importers exist for Miro, Mural and Lucid files only. Uploading a PDF as a plain file: Not verified as of 2026-10-04, check the vendor page.
What survives from a Whiteboard export
A Whiteboard image export uploads as one flat picture if its file type is on the list; notes, ink and shapes are not separate editable objects (our inference from the format, not a vendor or Microsoft statement). Microsoft Whiteboard is not on the list of FigJam importers. HTML is not listed as an accepted upload on the pages read.
Mural
Import formats accepted
The list of accepted file types: Not verified as of 2026-10-04, check the vendor page. Mural's supported file formats help article refused our automated read (HTTP 401), and the Mural pages that did load name no file types. The Mural integrations page says files can be imported from Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive.
What survives from a Whiteboard export
Which image types Mural accepts: Not verified as of 2026-10-04, check the vendor page; try one exported image on the free plan before you commit. An image that does upload is one flat picture; notes, ink and shapes are not separate editable objects (our inference from the format, not a vendor or Microsoft statement). Neither Microsoft Whiteboard nor HTML is mentioned on the Mural pages read.
Lucidspark (Lucid)
Import formats accepted
PNG or PDF files through the import dialog. A CSV imports as Lucid Cards or Sticky Notes. JPEG and GIF are not named in the import article. The Miro board importer needs a vector PDF (maximum 400 MB, one file per page) and fails on non-vector PDFs and on images, so it does not fit a Whiteboard image export.
What survives from a Whiteboard export
A Whiteboard image export saved as PNG imports as one flat picture; notes, ink and shapes are not separate editable objects (our inference from the format, not a vendor or Microsoft statement). If your exported file is not a PNG, convert it to PNG first (our advice). Neither Microsoft Whiteboard nor HTML is mentioned in Lucid's import article.
Stay in Microsoft 365: Whiteboard in Teams and on the web (work or school accounts)
Import formats accepted
No import needed for OneDrive-backed boards. The Azure to OneDrive migration tool ended on 25 September 2026, so a board still in Azure can no longer be moved into OneDrive.
What survives from a Whiteboard export
OneDrive-backed boards stay as .whiteboard files in the creator's OneDrive and are not removed by the app retirement. A board still in Azure survives only as the file you export before 16 October 2026.
How to read this summary
- The text under each option is copied from two columns of the alternatives matrix in the paid pack, word for word. It was read from the vendors' own pages on 2026-10-04 with an automated fetch tool.
- Where a vendor page gave no answer or refused the automated read, the cell says "Not verified as of 2026-10-04, check the vendor page" instead of a guess.
- That an uploaded image is one flat picture is our inference from the format. No vendor page and no Microsoft page read for this guide states it.
- This page has no ranking and no recommended option. Tenant admins looking for a bulk export will find what Microsoft documents on the bulk export page.
The full matrix is in the paid pack
This page shows 3 of the 7 columns: the option, the import formats accepted and what survives. The Microsoft Whiteboard rescue pack holds the full alternatives matrix as CSV and as Markdown: 5 rows, one per option, and 7 columns: option, import formats accepted, what survives from a Whiteboard export, free tier limits, price per editor, source URL, date checked. It also holds the export runbook as one self-contained HTML file. 3 files, the same for every buyer.
Not every cell is filled with a vendor figure: cells that could not be read from the vendor page carry the same "Not verified" wording as above. The pack does not export anything for you and contains no software.
Price: $12 (USD), one-time payment, no subscription.
